Claude vs ChatGPT for a small business: an honest comparison
Both can run your email and admin drafts. The habit you build matters more than the tool you pick.
If you run a business on your own, you've probably wondered whether to use Claude or ChatGPT. Both are good. Both have free plans. And the thing that decides whether AI helps your business is not which one you pick, it's whether the AI drafts and you send.
What they have in common
- Projects. Both let you group chats into a project with its own files and instructions. Both offer Projects on their free plans, with limits on how many projects or files you can add.
- Connecting your tools. Both can connect to other apps, such as your email or calendar. What's available depends on your plan and, for some features, your country, so check the help center before you count on it.
- Privacy controls. Both let you choose whether your chats are used to train their models, and both offer a chat mode that isn't saved to your history.
Where Claude tends to be stronger
A fair note first: this course teaches with Claude, so weigh our view with that in mind. Its Gmail, Calendar and Drive connectors are available on every plan, including free, and it asks for your approval before sending, replying or forwarding by default. If most of your admin is writing, it's a good place to start.
Where ChatGPT tends to be stronger
ChatGPT has built-in image generation, which helps if you make your own social posts or product graphics. It's also very widely used, so tutorials for common tasks are easy to find. If your work mixes writing with visuals, it may suit you better.
How to choose in one week
- Pick five real emails you need to answer this week.
- Give both tools the same instructions: your sign-off, your length, and the full thread for each email.
- Compare the drafts. Which needed fewer edits? Which got the facts right? Which sounded like you?
- Keep the winner, and stop testing. Switching tools every month costs more time than either tool saves.
The part that matters more
Whichever you choose, set the same rule on day one: it never sends anything. If a tool offers to send for you, decline and send from your own inbox after you've read the draft. Then write your rules down once so you don't repeat yourself, which is covered in write rules once so Claude remembers your voice. The same approach works in ChatGPT's project instructions.
Features and plans change often. Before you pay for anything, check the official help center for what your plan includes today.
